The waters flowtiir into Sohswap River, a.nl fioin thence through Souawnp Lake and Katn- loos Lake, whli t lie flowojie from tbe north- ' eni rim of llie Columbia Basin, carry (n their drift, )iod in quantities which lecent pro. I cc ling demonstrates 10 be good rajing pla cert. Among the principal leeders.of Hun awap, from I lie east Htid south-e Bf-t lire Cherry and Sjiillemedseen creeks. These rise in the Si-1-k rk Ktng', and Cherry (Jreek is the farthest south. A few miles from it confluence with the " nuswnp River, Cherry Creek hritnches, nnd on the dividing rldfj" between its forks, a milrorso from the junction, lire the Filver-lnilea, which a few week sirco roducud such on t-xii'e-went among quartz-operators in this country. Tilt so lode have not, as yet, been developed, imd the r.arlits interested nre wailing the no tion of 'he Coloniiil authorities, before prn. ceediui; to nclive operations. The custom of tbe British authorities Is to (runt an extensive reserve on the line, nnd in the neighborhood of quartz-lodes, with acermin length of time in which prospectors may find out the most vnluahle sections of the mine, after which litey elect a smaller area, which is tensed to them at a nominal rent fur a term of years, usually twenty-one. In these mines several petitions for reserves of two miles erjimre have bsen granted, and a period of eighteen months given tor the petitioners to make the selection of Ihe reduced quai titles id ground on which ihey propose to commence permanent mining operations. This arrange ment protects discoverers in tbe eijntment ot extensive mining privileges, and makes a good discovery doubly valuable by giving a perfest title and tiudiaturbed possession. On Cherry Creek, good placers were worked iu 1801, but they were limited in extent. It is now reported, tbat to the north, on the west? em slop of tbe S.-lkirk Range, good placers are found; only equalled, and not surpassed by loose, on lue, eastern, or Columbia Iliver Slope. J The southern edge of this new mining dis trict is about two hundred and for y miles diie north ot this place, and can be reached nine mouths iu the year from the Dalles, by keep ing tbe route on the west side of the Coluin bin, ot which we have before spoken in this paper. The route to be traveled is remarkably direct and will not be over three hundred miles. la supplying the demand for leadit.g do mestic staple", we would have only the Irat s portation from ,the Willamette Valley to the Dalles, and from thence -to tbe mines. It wpuld be impossible for Victoria to take the k'me articles from Portland to that place, from thence send them to Fort Yale ; thence carry them one hundred and fourteen miles by land thence ou hundred and fifty by water up Kimlugps 'and Souswap lake, and then pack or haul theru from . thirty 10 a hundred miles into the mountains, Iu jhis kind of con lest, we should have lb advantage of 1 hotter and cheaper water transit, 4ttd lien ptiVo'u'r supplies on pack-animals which post about half as much here as they do in British C 1-tni bia. We will certainly win, in case our Brit ish neighbors thiuk til to try and take this trs.de.,' , ' ' We recommend to those having interests io this matter to take' it in band,' and give to lii is plac - the prominence it merits, in cpnoe tlon with ttie'trndeto the loinhifnmriiiog'dis tricls of 'the British possessions.,. Our advan iiges of location, are so obvious that Ihey mutt strike me reason ot an, upon the slight est iiiVesitgailpji. ."' ". Iu ihe.-e "piping times of peace " we do not give that import ance to such matters whLh ihey deserve, himI as ' giiinvienged war has smoothed his wtiukleil front "it is to hoped 1(111 ihe day may never come when the Oregon militia will be culled on to " go after " a foreign or do mestic loe. The Uev. Thomas Condon will deliver a l.-clure this evening, on the geology of the interior seciion of Oregon. It will be remembered by citizens of the Dalles that Mr. Condon was engaged on a tour of ol-servation Iu tbe south nnd south-east ot lis place in the fall, a' d during that lime made collections of fos.-ils, ores and the like, hii-h, when intelligently commented upon, serve to illustrate a tlieo y nnd instruct the mind.
